Many often assume that newer is better. Through this line of thinking, it’s thought that the modern world has delivered us to the peak of human progress in areas ranging from technology to philosophy to healthcare. However, despite our advancements, the increased comforts of modernity have also brought many problems, paving the way for diseases such as diabetes to run rampant throughout the world. Perhaps it’s time that we take a step back and consult the wisdom of the past in order to establish a healthier future.

One practical way that we can do this is through Ayurveda, India’s system of health care that is more than  5,000 years old. Although Western medicine has made great strides toward curing diseases, many find it lacking when it comes to preventing diseases in the first place when compared to Ayurveda. 

This difference is especially important when it comes to diabetes. Although it’s quite difficult to cure type 2 diabetes once a patient is diagnosed, the ailment is relatively easy to prevent. For that reason, many patients experience great outcomes when using Ayurveda in tandem with modern treatment options for diabetes.

Western Medicine's Approach to Diabetes

After being diagnosed with diabetes, doctors practicing Western medicine typically prescribe treatments involving a combination of medications, diet, and exercise. For those with type 1 diabetes, regular insulin injections are required as well. 

Prescription medications are essential for the treatment of diabetes from a Western point of view, unfortunately, these medications often carry negative side effects.

For example, medications such as Metformin, which help the body regulate blood sugar and respond to insulin, can have challenging side effects such as diarrhea and flatulence.  The FDA recently determined that Canagliflozin, a drug used to lower blood sugar, causes an increased risk of leg or foot amputation. In addition to those challenges, diabetes drugs such as Pioglitazone and Januvia can increase the risk of bladder cancer and thyroid cancer. Not only do these drugs have negative side effects, but they are sometimes ineffective as well. In fact, up to 10% of patients stop responding to type 2 diabetes medications each year.

With these ineffective and sometimes dangerous interventions, despite Western medicine’s best efforts to cure diabetes, incidences of the disease continue to rise. Ayurveda provides an alternative approach that can be taken alongside your current, doctor-recommended, for managing diabetes that is both effective and safe.

Managing Diabetes with Ayurveda

Ayurvedic practitioners have been working to help patients with diabetes for thousands of years, with the earliest recorded reference to the disease originating between 1500 and 1000 BC in India’s Vedic texts. 

Rather than simply putting a band-aid on the problem by using prescription meditations, Ayurveda tackles the root causes of disease, which are often found in imbalances in a patient’s diet and lifestyle. Although Western medicine looks at these areas as well, their analysis is shallow compared to Ayurveda’s in-depth approach of analyzing body types to determine the best approach for each unique individual.

Ayurveda uses the philosophy that like increases like and opposites balance. After understanding how a patient is imbalanced, Ayurvedic practitioners prescribe foods, herbs, spices, and exercises to bring the body back into a state of balanced health. With this technique, Ayurveda can remove the symptoms of diabetes and increase patient well-being.

In general, type 2 diabetes and prediabetes are caused by an imbalance of Kapha dosha, which is comprised of the elements earth and water. Just like Western medicine, Ayurveda offers treatment in the forms of diet, exercise, and herbal medicines to help balance kapha.

With such a challenging outlook for those with diabetes and obesity in our country, it’s clear that we need a new approach outside of conventional methods.

Even if you’re not experiencing any of the symptoms of diabetes, if you have any of the  risk factors, taking control of your health and preventative steps can mean you avoid ever being diagnosed. If you’ve already been diagnosed, Ayurveda is a natural, effective way to approach diabetes through time-tested methods of detoxification, rekindling the digestive fire, diet, and lifestyle.

Customized Cleanse

Diet and exercise alone are often unable to clear the body of toxins that build up over time. During your treatment, we will focus on removing these toxins through a unique, customized Ayurvedic approach to cleansing. This process that has been shown to help those with pre-diabetes, diabetes, and weight gain restore digestive power, energy flow in the body, inner balance, and vitality.

Healing Foods

In Ayurveda, it is recognized that each individual has a unique genetic makeup or constitution, and what is good for one individual may be bad for another. During this specialized program, you will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with our world-class Ayurvedic doctors and board-certified Western medical doctor who will determine a customized diet and cooking plan specifically for you. Some adjustments to your diet will start just after registration for the retreat and continue beyond the retreat to support your journey to wellness.

Evidence-Based Stress Reduction Practices

Stress is an important component to consider when considering the right treatment for prediabetes, diabetes, and weight loss. When chronic stress occurs, the hormones used in short term stress get left turned on for a long period of time. This can result in glucose piling up in the blood which can cause insulin resistance due to high glucose levels. Meditation, mindfulness, breathwork, chanting, and mudras are not only proven effective stress-reduction tools but are also much more accessible and more cost-effective compared to traditional Western approaches because you can easily practice them at home at no cost.

Natural Movement Fitness

We provide exercise options that are the most natural movement for your body, such as walking in nature or practicing gentle yoga. All of our exercises are easily achievable at home so you can continue your progress. These mindful exercises will help you to lead a more active life and balance your blood glucose levels. In addition to getting your heart rate up, yoga postures are specifically beneficial because they help to stimulate the pancreas to cleanse and activate internal organs, as well as relax the body-mind complex. FAQs

Currently, we are catering to Type 2 Diabetes who are not on insulin or anyone that is pre-diabetic or has any case of insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome.

We are currently not able to accept anyone that falls into the following categories:

  • Anyone using insulin- either type 1 diabetic or complicated type 2 on insulin.
  • Diabetics on 4 or more diabetes medications.
  • Recent hospitalization within 1-year with diabetes-related complications.
  • If within 6 month had gastrointestinal bleeding- either due to stomach ulcer or from the colon.
  • Had weight reduction surgery like lap band or Gastric bypass within 1 yr. (Liposuctions is ok).
  • If your mobility is extremely restricted due to weight gain and can not walk, cannot sit or participate in any form of exercise.
  • Pregnant with gestational diabetes or lactating.

During your initial consultation with the board-certified western medical doctor please inform them of any current prescription medication you are taking and medical history.

Please discuss your special dietary need or allergies with an Ayurveda specialist. Dietary requirements, such as gluten-free and vegan options are generally available.

No. If you have diabetes, you will work with our team to help manage your diabetes and/or lose weight. We will have both an Ayurvedic doctor and a board-certified western medical doctor on staff to care for you during the process. However, it will be up to your primary care provider to make the decision. We encourage that you share all your herbal and non-herbal supplements with your primary care doctor.

No. If you have diabetes, you will work with our team to help manage your diabetes and/or lose weight. A lot of participants lose weight. However, it is completely dependent on how your body reacts to the treatments. It also depends on how closely the diet and lifestyle recommendations are followed.

During this specialized 6-month program and 10-day retreat, you’ll receive an individualized diet specific to your unique body type to rebuild your body and your digestion. A lot of the foods that will be prepared and recommended are based around a plant-based diet.

Aside from your personal effects (and any medication), we suggest you bring comfortable clothing and layers (mountain weather can be changeable), and anything that will help you feel more at home.

You may wish to also bring swimwear for use in the steam room.

Each studio space at the Center is equipped with yoga mats, blankets, and blocks.

Everyone has unique physical capabilities. All of the programs are adjusted to meet the attendee where they are at to help build up strength and endurance.

During your pre-cleanse, cleanse and post-cleanse a plant-based diet is recommended. However, we will create a program which is sustainable for long-term success.

The food is locally sourced and non-GMO.

Absolutely, for an additional fee. You can create your own vacation with an R&R Retreat and spend some additional days relaxing at the Center. Choose from a variety of daily classes, activities, and spa treatments, as well as an abundance of nature trails and quiet spaces. Please discuss with our Ayurveda specialist for details. 

You’ll receive an individualized diet plan specific to your unique body type to rebuild your body and your digestion. During the residential retreat,  you’ll be served a plant-based diet to support the process.

No. If you are prediabetic or have family members that are diabetic or overweight, this can be used as a preventative measure to help you avoid getting diabetes or becoming overweight in the future.
