Chances are, if you’re searching for diabetes information, you’ve already been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes. Or, a search of symptoms you or a loved one are experiencing has brought you here. Almost 10% of Americans have diabetes, and the number is rising. Individuals becoming prediabetic is growing too, and diagnosed in one out of every three Americans—which left untreated develops into type 2 diabetes.
Of adults diagnosed with diabetes, over 87% are overweight—43% obese, and 17% severely obese. Being even slightly overweight increases diabetes risk five times, and being seriously obese increases the risk of having diabetes by 60 times. Of all the causes of type 2 diabetes, obesity remains the number one factor.
What you may not realize is how serious the disease is. Diabetes is more than being really thirsty, tired, peeing a lot, and dry skin. When diabetes affects your body’s ability to produce or use insulin, a hormone that allows your body to turn glucose (sugar) into energy, it can take a deadly toll on every part of your body. Just a few of the symptoms you may experience are
Along with obesity, there are other factors that can increase your risk for diabetes:
Fat distribution. If you store fat mainly in the abdomen, you have a greater risk of type 2 diabetes than if you store fat elsewhere, such as in your hips and thighs. Your risk of type 2 diabetes rises if you’re a man with a waist circumference above 40 inches (101.6 centimeters) or a woman with a waist that’s greater than 35 inches (88.9 centimeters).
Inactivity. The less active you are, the greater your risk of type 2 diabetes. Physical activity helps you control your weight, uses up glucose as energy and makes your cells more sensitive to insulin.
Family history. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases if your parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes.
Race. Although it’s unclear why, people of certain races—including black, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian-American people—are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than white people are.
Age. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases as you get older, especially after age 45. That’s probably because people tend to exercise less, lose muscle mass and gain weight as they age. But type 2 diabetes is also increasing dramatically among children, adolescents and younger adults.
Prediabetes. Prediabetes is a condition in which your blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. Left untreated, prediabetes often progresses to type 2 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes. If you developed gestational diabetes when you were pregnant, your risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases. If you gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds (4 kilograms), you’re also at risk of type 2 diabetes.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome. For women, having polycystic ovarian syndrome—a common condition characterized by irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth and obesity—increases the risk of diabetes.
Once you have been diagnosed, modern medicine approaches can often have harsh side effects—most cause diarrhea, weight gain, and weakness, and some even induce genital infections, inflammation of the pancreas, and severe nausea, and potentially increase the risk of lower limb amputation. Some of these medications can actually make diabetes worse, especially when they cause weight gain. When it comes to weight-loss, in a western approach, the options are limited and include dietary changes, exercise and activity, behavioral changes, weight-loss medications, and surgery. Weight-loss medications come with inherent risks and side-effects and may lose their effectiveness over time. Also, once the medication is no longer taken, there is the chance the weight loss will be regained. In terms of weight-loss surgery, it can be effective, but it is not guaranteed an individual will lose weight, and there are lots of associated risks.
Not only can diabetes take a toll on you physically, it can be a huge financial burden as well. In fact, the American Diabetes Association calls the costs “staggering.”
The breakdown is alarming: “People with diagnosed diabetes incur average medical expenditures of $16,752 per year, of which about $9,601 is attributed to diabetes. On average, people with diagnosed diabetes have medical expenditures approximately 2.3 times higher than what expenditures would be in the absence of diabetes.
For the cost categories analyzed, care for people with diagnosed diabetes accounts for 1 in 4 healthcare dollars in the U.S., and more than half of that expenditure is directly attributable to diabetes.”
Indirect costs include
- Increased absenteeism ($3.3 billion)
- Reduced productivity while at work ($26.9 billion) for the employed population
- Reduced productivity for those not in the labor force ($2.3 billion)
- Inability to work as a result of disease-related disability ($37.5 billion)
- Lost productive capacity due to early mortality ($19.9 billion).
These numbers highlight the substantial burden that diabetes imposes on society, but even more so are the intangibles—pain and suffering, resources from care provided by non-paid caregivers, and the burden associated with undiagnosed diabetes.

Food as Medicine
In Ayurveda, it is recognized that each individual has a unique genetic makeup or constitution, and what is good for one individual may be bad for another. During this specialized program, you will work one-on-one with our world-class Ayurvedic doctors and a board-certified Western medical doctor to determine a customized diet and cooking plan specifically for you. Some adjustments to your diet will start just after registration for the retreat and continue beyond the retreat to support your journey to wellness.
Our mind, body, and spirit are so deeply interconnected that true restoration of health only happens when we treat the whole. Ayurveda is grounded in this principle. After a consultation with our Ayurvedic doctor, our highly-trained Ayurvedic therapists work with your body and unique constitution to encourage healing, growth, and physical stress relief—bringing you into an open, blissful, and restored state.
Ancient Ayurvedic Medicine
Support your health with the most natural, highly effective, remedy the planet has made available to us for thousands of years. There will be many different customized combinations of herbs used throughout the program to aid in circulation, blood sugar levels, pain, digestion, anti-inflammation, immunity, weight-loss, and more.
Gentle and accessible for everyone, the benefits of yoga are vast. We’ve designed a special yoga sequence to bring more energy to the pancreatic area to help cleanse, activate, and tone up the internal organs. Aside from supporting internal organ function, yoga enhances physical fitness and the restoration of mental and emotional balance. The many benefits of yoga extend far beyond prediabetes, diabetes, and weight loss, hence why yoga is continuing to grow in its popularity.
Evidence-Based Stress Reduction Practices
Stress is an important component to consider when considering the right treatment for prediabetes, diabetes, and weight loss. When chronic stress occurs, the result can cause insulin resistance due to high glucose levels. Meditation, mindfulness, breathwork, chanting, and mudras are not only proven effective stress-reduction tools but are also much more accessible and more cost-effective compared to traditional Western approaches. You can easily practice them at home at no cost. SKY breathing, an important component of the program, has been proven to reduce stress and negative emotions.

All of our exercises are easily achievable at home so you can continue your progress. These mindful exercises will help you to lead a more active life and balance your blood glucose levels. In addition to getting your heart rate up, yoga postures are specifically beneficial because they help to stimulate the pancreas to cleanse and activate internal organs, as well as relax the body-mind complex. We have seen 30 minutes of exercise per day drastically improve results for individuals challenged by diabetes, weight gain, and obesity. Say goodbye to gym memberships and hello to success!
