How Food Can Be Your Medicine With Ayurveda

What is in your meal and where did the ingredients come from? The World Health Organization set out to help you answer those questions during this year’s World Health Day on April 7. This commitment by the WHO falls in line with our commitment to Ayurvedic cooking.

In Ayurveda, food is considered to be medicine. Ayurvedic cooking methods help you have an idea about what to eat and the right way of taking food. This knowledge supports the healing process and helps the body to eliminate toxins and restore balance.

Ayurveda does not view the process of cooking as separate from that of digestion and nutrition. An eating sequence is recommended to put the focus on easier digestion and the body’s capability of extracting the nutritional essence of the consumed food.

Let food be your medicine.

To follow the Ayurvedic approach, food should be cooked based on the following principles:

  • Calm, happy and positive state of mind
  • Right combination
  • Should be tasty and healthy
  • Hygienic
  • Importance of spices to balance the food.
  • Combining all six tastes – sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, astringent – to make a balanced diet.

The benefits of Ayurvedic cooking are plentiful and contribute to overall health and wellness. They include better mood control, freedom from depression & anxiety, and increased energy levels.
